PayPal Launches PYUSDx Customized Stablecoin Platform, Expanding Payment Application Scenarios

Internet business giant PayPal (PYPL) is further expanding its stablecoin business. The company announced the launch of the blockchain-based customized stablecoin developer platform PYUSDx, providing enterprises with stablecoin issuance infrastructure backed by PayPal USD (PYUSD).

PYUSDx was jointly developed with the assistance of fiat-pegged token technology company M0 and crypto payment company MoonPay. The two companies said on Tuesday that the platform was first announced publicly in February this year and has now officially entered the launch stage, meaning that the stablecoin infrastructure PayPal has built around PYUSD is further extending toward enterprise issuance and application.

In terms of its functional positioning, PYUSDx is not simply a stablecoin product aimed at ordinary users, but infrastructure for enterprises to launch customized stablecoins. Enterprises can use the platform to issue customized tokens backed by PYUSD, thereby lowering the technical and infrastructure barriers involved in entering the stablecoin issuance sector.

At present, crypto-native companies have already launched related tokens through PYUSDx, including Saturn, Concrete and Capital. According to the relevant press release, the addition of these projects has already brought more than $100 million in transaction volume to the platform.

The background to PayPal's expansion of its stablecoin business is that the traditional financial system is gradually moving toward blockchain infrastructure. As stablecoin applications gradually extend from cryptocurrency trading to scenarios such as payments, competition in the stablecoin market is no longer limited to the two major issuers, Tether and Circle Internet (CRCL).

For traditional payment companies such as PayPal, stablecoins are becoming an important direction for competing for digital payment infrastructure. Especially as payment giant Stripe adopts a more aggressive strategy, established financial and payment institutions are beginning to seek new competitive advantages.

PayPal had previously entered the cryptocurrency payment sector. CoinDesk had disclosed that the company was the first payment institution to begin offering cryptocurrency payment services in 2020. Now, PayPal has chosen to cooperate with crypto-sector companies such as M0 and MoonPay and continues to increase its investment in stablecoin infrastructure.

M0 CEO Luca Prosperi said that PayPal is already actively promoting the development of the PYUSD stablecoin, while Venmo's large coverage gives PayPal unique conditions to further bring PYUSD into the mainstream market.

At the same time, M0 itself is also continuing to expand its partnership network. Prosperi said that M0 is also cooperating with Stripe's Bridge and regulated custodian company Anchorage.

However, as more financial institutions and enterprises enter the stablecoin sector, the market is also facing fragmentation caused by the increasing number of participants. Prosperi said in an interview that the increase in the number of financial institutions would make the market more fragmented, while most financial institutions are not truly familiar with how to interact with developers.

Therefore, M0 is attempting to establish an intermediary layer between financial institutions and developers, abstracting complexity and risk to promote integration among different new projects.

In terms of the specific architecture of PYUSDx, the tokens issued through the platform are issued by MoonPay Digital Assets Ltd. The technical system combines M0's universal stablecoin and digital token technology with MoonPay's existing issuance and distribution infrastructure.

In addition to the projects that have already launched related tokens, USD.AI and Fairblock have also become other enterprises issuing stablecoins on the PYUSDx platform.

Judging from PayPal's current business actions, PYUSDx further expands the ways PYUSD can be used: PayPal is not only continuing to promote its own stablecoin, but has also begun extending stablecoin capabilities to more projects and applications through enterprise-oriented customized issuance infrastructure.

For the stablecoin market, this means that competition is gradually extending from single-token issuance to issuance technology, circulation infrastructure and enterprise application channels. The business layout formed by PayPal through PYUSD, Venmo and PYUSDx also establishes a closer connection between payments and digital assets.

At present, the original text does not disclose how many enterprises PYUSDx will cover in the future, nor does it provide specific business data beyond the platform's transaction volume. Therefore, the scale of the enterprise stablecoin ecosystem that the platform can eventually establish, and whether PYUSDx can further expand the application scope of PYUSD, remain to be seen.
